| Penthouse Forum reviews BLOOD AND COFFEE |
| 2010.01.27 02:58:05 | |
|
From December's Vol 44 No 12 Forum magazine review: "Thanks to Twilight and True Blood, vampires are hot and sexy again, but while Blood and Coffee taps into that trend it is definitely more of a horror fantasy than a straightforward erotic novel. Many of the characters here come to grisly ends, so it's not for the squeamish, but Lisa Lane manages to keep the action moving at a relentless pace while detailing Karen's conversion from human to vampire and all the dilemmas she faces along the way. This is the first part in a trilogy, and there are enough clues as to how the action will progress to ensure those who like a bit of gore with their sexual tension will hunt down the second and third volumes." | Two New Rave Reviews! |
| 2009.12.29 02:47:52 | |
|
Bitten by Books just reviewed The Darkness and the Night II: Cosmic Orgasm and The Darkness and the Night III: Twins of Darkness, giving Cosmic O 4.5 Tombstones and Twins of Darkness a whopping 5 Tombstones! From the review for Cosmic O: Lisa Lane picked up right where she left off with this emotionally packed sequel. I actually enjoyed Karen in this book more than the first. She grew not just in her vampiric self but as a woman and a soon to be mother. Her journeys kept me lounging on the couch, unable to put the book down and leave her to face the atrocities she was going though alone. There were actually a few spots in the plot that I was not expecting, and that made the tale even that much better. If you are looking for a new vampire series with a heroine that doesn’t have the easy life but keeps on going, then this is the series for you. Karen is one vampire that you won’t forget! From the review for Twins of Darkness: I have enjoyed the ride that Lisa Lane has taken me on with the first two books. But this third book took me beyond enjoyment. Through the varied twists and turns, she has offered a world beyond the imagination. The development of the twins is a reminder of how children grow into individuals of their own making despite how we may try to guide them; we can only hope that they will take the lessons we teach them. Ms. Lane has managed to entice, entrap, and thrill us with her latest installment in the Darkness and Night series, and I have enjoyed it thoroughly. Thanks so much, Bitten by Books, for the awesome reviews, and thanks to my readers, for joining me in the adventure! For more reviews on The Darkness and the Night trilogy, check out the review page on my website. Warm regards and happy reading! | Happy Birthday, Ravenous Romance! |
| 2009.12.01 09:39:29 | |
|
On December 1, 2008, New York literary agent Lori Perkins teamed up with longtime publishers Holly Schmidt and Allan Penn, to embark on a literary venture that promised to be innovative, provocative, and unafraid to take chances. Ravenous Romance has met all of those goals and then some, and I’m so pleased to be among their list of authors. I learned about Ravenous Romance just a few months before the launch. Being an avid follower of Lori Perkins’ blog, “Agent in the Middle,” I responded to an open call for submissions, for an anthology that would feature creative short stories about Sex and Shoes. I wrote a chancy piece featuring a married couple who appear at first glance to have a shared shoe fetish ... only at the heartfelt end does the twist reveal itself and the real meaning of the story shine through. Ms. Perkins accepted it, and then invited me to submit more of my stories for other upcoming anthologies. I ended up having two stories being accepted in the Men in Shorts anthology, at which time Ms. Perkins requested to see some of my longer works. My erotic horror vampire trilogy, The Darkness and the Night, had been on the back burner for some time, and decided to add a little romance to the story and see if Ravenous Romance might be interested. They bought the trilogy, and then commissioned me to work on the most delightful project I have ever had the privilege to write: an erotic space trek, inspired by some of my favorite episodic sci-fi shows (Star Trek, Red Dwarf, Farscape, etc.). It was a closet-geek’s dream come true, and to this day my tribute, Lust in Space, campy and kinky in all the right places, has been a fan favorite. I contributed a couple more short stories (my personal favorite is “Blood and Money,” which can be found in the Sex and Taxes Anthology), and had a blast with those, as well, but nothing prepared me for the next proposition I would receive: Ravenous Romance had teamed up with the Home Shopping Network, planning the first ever television release of an exclusive romance collection. The owners had hand-picked six books each in three different subgenres: paranormal, historical, and contemporary, and they wanted Lust in Space to be among the paranormal group. However, they wanted me to rewrite the story and create a sister book, of sorts: whereas Lust in Space is an experimentally kinky erotic work (I had fun seeing how far I might push my limits), Love in Space was to be romantic, sweet, and completely vanilla. It turned out to be, in my opinion, my best published work. Love in Space has it all: action, adventure, space travel, aliens, romance, wit, literary “Easter eggs”—and intergalactic war. I can’t thank Ravenous Romance enough for challenging me as they did with this story. Lori Perkins and Holly Schmidt knew how to make a great story even better, and they pushed me to turn a fun and kinky space trek into a heartfelt and fun romantic adventure. Moreover, they gave me the chance to prove myself as an author—in a market of mass closed doors, stiff competition, and form rejection letters, during a time in the recession when being a no-name writer like me would have been otherwise left sitting cold in the dark. Writing for Ravenous Romance has been an amazing experience. I’m delighted to have so many people reading my work, and I’m delighted to be working with such a great group of people. Happy Birthday, Ravenous Romance—here’s to another great year! | Another Great Review for TWINS OF DARKNESS! |
| 2009.08.20 11:07:32 | |
|
Critics agree: The Darkness and the Night III: Twins of Darkness is the best in the series. Clayton Bye of The Deepening says: What’s so different about Twins of Darkness? Well… The author’s style makes for effortless reading; Lane’s novel is interesting, variable and complicated without the heaviness often associated with stories of substance, and she balances her many characters and plot lines like a master. Also, this is not your typical vampire story, and although there was enough sex to make my temperature rise, the story is not just a vehicle for eroticism. Click here to read the full review. Check out what other critics have had to say about Twins of Darkness: Book III is best experienced if you read its prequels. The characters take some time to understand if you do not know their history, but regardless they are very well written and exciting. This is certainly one of the most unique vampire novels I have come across. It is chock full of imagination and feeling; a totally fresh look at the dark side. --Loloty, Coffee Time Romance Having read the first twenty-nine pages off and on, I continued straight through to the end. As I’ve already said, the plot is superb, and when such a plot comes along, I always marvel at the human imagination and what it can produce. --Fanny, Cerebral Reviews Looking for a horrotica series with a taste of romance and a heavy bite? Willing to read a few books before you earn your Happily-Ever-After? Do you think vampires ought to be scary? Do you think even the sexy ones should be dangerous? I do. | Bitten by Books Reviews BLOOD AND COFFEE |
| 2009.08.08 08:31:49 | |

Nicole at Bitten by Books says about The Darkness and the Night: Blood and Coffee: This is a strangely compelling tale of blood, love, lust, and betrayal. While it seems slightly choppy in some places, I was compelled to continue reading by the obvious emotions and raw talent of Lisa Lane. ... I found this to be an interesting and different tale of vampires. One that has me intrigued as to where Ms. Lane is going with this obvious start to a new series. Read the full review here. | Two New Reviews! |
| 2009.04.29 01:45:36 | |
|
Phoebe Jordan of Talk About My Favorite Authors just released reviews for the first two books in my The Darkness and the Night series, giving Blood and Coffee 3.5 Open Books and Cosmic Orgasm 4 Open Books. My thanks to Phoebe, who delved into horrorica--not her genre of choice--on a chance, after reading and enjoying my romantic, erotic sci-fi novel, Lust in Space. I think these reviews are very fair and accurate, and I am happy to share them now with you. From Phoebe's review for Blood and Coffee: I had a good time reading this novel because it was different from many of the novels that I usually read. I both liked and disliked Karen because even though she is a strong female character there are times that I really thought she could have done things differently if she wanted to. This also goes the same for Billy the vampire who turns Karen because seems like a nice loving guy but then he shows his true colors as a psyhco. There were some very steamy sex scenes between Karen and Billy that I really enjoyed because they have this attraction to one another even though at first Karen hates Billy for turning her. I also felt kind of creeped out when I read some the scary suspense scenes throughout the novel and I should expect that since it is a dark horror erotic novel with vampires. I enjoyed reading the novel though sometimes I wondered who was good and who was evil throughout the novel because sometimes Karen seemed like she was headed towards being evil while somtimes Billy was headed towards actually being good. Towards the end of the novel I was really looking forward to reading the next The Darkness & the Night series to find out what else is in store for Karen and Billy after the way this novel ended. I give this book 3.5 Open Books Read the full review here. From Phoebe's review for Cosmic Orgasm: This book is much more exciting and scarier than the first book because now I have a sense of who is evil and who isn't unlike the first book. I like Karen more in this novel because she has come to accept that she is a vampire and doesn't have to kill a human in order to survive. There were some pretty scary and heartbreaking scenes in this book that I enjoyed reading about because it really helped me understand Karen and even Billy more than I did before. I finished the book much quicker than the first and by the time I read the last sentence in the last chapter I really wanted Lisa Lane's next and conclusion to her The Darkness & the Night series to be published already so I could read it. I give this book 4 Open Books Read the full review here. | Vampires in Romance and Erotica |
| 2009.01.22 05:42:15 | |
|
Vampires are a common theme in romance and erotica. A number of well written vampire-based works have been released here at Ravenous Romance. What’s not to love? Vampires are dangerous, powerful . . . and nocturnal. What woman hasn’t enjoyed indulging in some kind of vampire fantasy? When comparing works, it’s fun to see the differences in mythos, characterization, and story, and yet intertwined amongst them the same basic elements and themes, those which make vampires so continuously popular. There is much so more than meets the hypnotic eye, when it comes to the reasons that vampires continue to seduce us helpless mortals, century after century; it all boils down to theme. In The Darkness and the Night series, the themes I chose came through motivations that I’m sure are common among other writers of this genre: with writing about vampires comes a freedom to express both our strongest hopes and our darkest fears about ourselves, and about humanity. With great strength and power, we find that there must also come a relative weakness. With vampires, the greatest weakness is generally sunlight, making darkness the ally and light the nemesis. Might we take the “darkness” and “light” themes a step further by taking them within, making the vampire the perfect model for the struggle between “dark and light” that exists within us all? In The Darkness and the Night: Blood and Coffee, Karen faces numerous struggles, the greatest of which being overcoming her recurring impulse to kill. Many of the situations she falls into, however, threaten various freedoms that previously, in her innocence, she had taken for granted. Control, chance, opportunity, and fate are strong themes throughout the book, and I think they mirror the struggle that all young women face, when finding their place in the world. The moral dilemmas Karen faces are obviously grossly expanded versions of those faced by the average woman, but they still pose the same questions: How would you respond if, overnight, you lost everything that had previously defined your life? What would you be willing to sacrifice for your freedom, if it were taken away from you? What would you do, if you got pregnant, and then realized the father was a “monster?” In the second book in the series (release date still TBA), the themes shift focus to freedom and control in the first half, and then shift again in the second half, to opportunity and fate. In this story, Karen is forced to face her darkest fears in order to reclaim all that should be rightfully hers, escaping a mental institution, and even the clutches of Hell, for a second chance at life, a second chance at love, and a second chance for her unborn twins. The trilogy, as a whole, takes a serious look at all that we hold most sacred as human beings, and then challenges and tests the beliefs we hold, the boundaries we set, and desires that exist within us all. From Brom Stoker, to Anne Rice, to the many talented authors here at Ravenous Romance, vampires have held their place as the objects of our passion and desire. As writers, writing about vampires is a surreal and sensual experience. The profundity of each individual story translates differently through every reader who decides to come along for the ride. Still, we each take from these guilty pleasures some kind of insight; as we explore the darkness, in turn we move ever closer to reaching and understanding the inner light we all also so desperately crave. | Welcome to My Blog! |
| 2009.01.15 05:59:46 | |
|
First and foremost, I would like to thank Ravenous Romance’s staff for all of their hard work and amazing talent. I am proud to be a part of this fantastic venture, and I know that this is only the beginning.
I came to Ravenous Romance by accident. I was, and still am, an avid reader of Lori Perkins’s blog, and when I saw her open call for short stories for an anthology titled Sex and Shoes, I knew that it was an opportunity that I could not pass up. I had only written a small amount of romance and erotica, my genres of choice being science fiction, literature, and horror, but I realized upon writing “My Two Size 10’s” just how much I enjoyed writing about romance, sensuality, and sex. When Ms. Perkins put out another call, this time for the Men in Shorts anthology, I knew that I needed to contribute to that one, as well ... and then came the 12 Days of Christmas anthology, to which I ended up contributing yet another short story, "Two Turtle Doves." I was hooked.
I signed up to write an original sci-fi novel (Pandora’s Hope, release date still TBA), when I realized that I had a trilogy that would mesh perfectly with Ravenous Romance’s style. The Darkness and the Night had been a work in progress for several years, based on a novel I wrote with my twin sister nearly twenty years ago. The series had some romantic and erotic elements, but I knew the books were not yet hot and seductive enough to live up to the Ravenous Romance name. After some initial work, I sent in the first installment to Ms. Perkins. With her help and direction, I was able to take the work to the next level, adding a sense of depth and sensuality that had been lacking in previous drafts. Ms. Perkins also came up with the subtitle, Blood and Coffee, which I absolutely love.
I am currently redrafting the second installment of The Darkness and the Night, which I have tentatively titled, Blood and Shadow. I am confident that those of you who liked Blood and Coffee will love Blood and Shadow. I have numerous twists and surprises in store, and I am grateful to the muses for their dedication to the quality and depth of this particular work. I know already that this book is going to be even better than the first, and I cannot wait to share the finished product with you.
I am also currently at the tail-end of writing a 5000+ word short story that serves as a prequel to The Darkness and the Night trilogy, but also stands alone, for those who have not yet begun to read the series. I have received numerous requests for additional stories following various characters in Blood and Coffee, and after much consideration, I decided to write about stepmother and witch, Spring Collins. I am very happy with how the story is unfolding, and I hope to be able to share that with you, as well, in one of RR’s upcoming anthologies.
More soon … and happy reading! Tags: writing | The Darkness and the Night | Blood and Coffee | Blood and Shadow | Lori Perkins | first post
