Happy Mardi Gras!

In honor of the occasion, let's have some fun here.I'm having a contest to give away one copy of SEX, LIES & WEDDING BELLS (m/m contemporary romance). I'll choose a winner randomly at Midnight Wed Feb 25, from everyone who comments to this blog posting and answers one of these questions:

1. Have you ever been to Mardi Gras or Carnivale (Brazil/Venice) and how did you like it? Was it what you expected?

2. If you haven't been, would you like to go, why or why not?

3. What's your favorite holiday to celebrate, and why?

1. I have not been to either Mardi Gras or Carnivale, unless you count the mini Mardi Gras parade I saw on the Venice Beach boardwalk this Saturday!

2. If I could go and have the ability to move through crowds as an unseen, non-corporeal me, I'd like to do so. I don't like big crowds and expect I'd go stark, raving mad if you plunked me down in the middle of Mardi Gras madness. I'd definitely snag some beads, though!

3. Halloween is my favorite holiday - I love everything about it. Love the pagan roots, love playing dress up and handing out candy to trick-or-treaters...love all the scary movie marathons that run during October... Halloween makes me feel very alive.

I have never been to either event - but would not pass up the opportunity to do so.

My favorite holiday is Christmas, although lately with a few family members further away, I don't enjoy it as much as I did in the past when we could all be together.

I have never celebrated Mardi Gras in my life, but I would like to go down to New Orleans one year in the future and celebrate. I just bought a beautiful mask today that I saw in the store. I couldn't pass it up So I guess I'm getting ready for that trip ^_^

I am a huge fan of masks and have a collection of them, many of which I bought in New Orleans!

I would love to go to Mardi Gras, but I don't know if I could handle the billions of folks that are there. I have a HUGE phobia of crowds. So I am happy to celebrate at home with some beads at the local college.

Hi Tami!
I have to agree about the crowds! They can take a lot of the fun out of the event. A good way to avoid them is to go several days before Mardi Gras day itself. There are lots of parades and events before and they are never quite as crazy as the Tuesday events themselves.

I haven't ever been to Mardi Gras but would love to. My favorite holiday is a toss up between Christmas and Halloween. Christmas is so full of tradition and childhood memories. Halloween is just so much fun and a lighthearted craziness!

I guess you are one of those people who like costumes? I don't really dress up much so Halloween isn't a favorite of mine. Sounds like you have a lot of good childhood memories!

I have never been to Mardi Gras, but have always wanted to! Just to see the area, experience the music and culture....*sigh*! It has always been a dream of mine!

I'm not entering the contest as I am a Midnight Seductions member and we're all running Mardis Gras contests right now. But did want to answer. lol I've never been to Mardis Gras or Carnivale, however, I've visited New Orleans on three occasions and absolutely love it. I'm afraid the crowds of Mardis Gras/Carnivale wouldn't be for me though. I love the area so much so that I am presently collaborating on a mainstream novel set in the area that is rampant with Nawlin's flavor including vodou. So far, so good.

Hi Tess, thanks so much for entering and supporting my contest. I agree the crowds can make a fun experience less enjoyable, so a good solution is go to the week before, there are still parades and events, just not as much craziness. I can't wait to hear more about the novel! OOOh voodoo... That scares the crap out of me, to be honest!

Several times. An ex of mine loved the boys in Rio, and so did I...several times. The men are so hot you don't know which way to look first and they love blonds from the US. It was actually so much fun I felt like I needed a vacation when I got home. The first time I went I packed too much. The second time I didn't even bring underwear

Oh my Ryan! If I were choosing a winner based on best answer, you'd win hands down ... I hope to hear some of those tales. It would certainly make a great short story, please write it and share with us!

The best trips are the ones that we need to recover from when we get home, and my trips to New Orleans have all been like that!

Sorry you weren't the winner, but I hope you'll read my book and let me know what you think!

I am planning on reading the book. It's the kind of thing I love.

I already did this as a short story for a book that was pubbed by Alyson a couple of years ago. I changed a few things (I made it a cruise ship instead of Marti Gras), but the sex was based on a couple of guys I met in Brazil.

Yes, I live in Louisiana and have went to hundreds of parades. I loved it! A few years ago we were able to go to New Orleans and stay in one of the clubs on St. Charles. It was a blast.

It's nice that it's still mainly a local tradition that hasn't scared away local residents after it got too touristy...

Hi! I've been to New Orleans a few times but never managed to go during Mardi Gras. Someday I hope to be able to have my spring break coincide with Mardi Gras, but as a teacher, I don't have much flexibility. I love the city and think it would be even more fun for the biggest party of the year!

A lot of people like Halloween and dressing up. I still haven't quite figured out why, because I don't get all excited trying to decide what to go as, it stresses me out! ANd aren't you naughty, wanting all those beads
